Campaign background & history

What's BOGOFS

We're a group of Bishopston residents who have got together to oppose the proposed supermarket development on Gloucester Road. The question is: Does Gloucester Road need yet another supermarket? We think not and hopefully you agree.

Gloucester Road has already been identified as one of the few thriving high streets in England. It’s full of vibrant local independent retailers. Its eclectic mix of shops, cafes and bars provide an atmosphere that's unique not only in Bristol but in England as a whole. But this could change... Soon.

A giant supermarket would provide intense competition for most of the local retailers. This is a competition where the only winners are the developers. At the risk of being too dramatic, the local economy will be shattered with devastating results such as mass closures, unemployment and the inevitable parade of boarded-up shop fronts.

Consider too the pollution carried by loading and un-loading on Ashley Down Road; traffic congestion would multiply as the roads weren't designed for lorries and mass access. If you value your local community and the features that make Gloucester Road such a special place to live, work, shop and play, join our campaign and say ‘NO!’ to another soulless supermarket and yes to small scale change. Join our campaign today.

Our Mission Statement:

"To actively preserve the unique and independent nature of commerce on and around Gloucester Road, and oppose any development which endangers both this and the local environment."

Our Campaign

BOGOFS stands for Bishopston Opposing Glut OF Supermarkets. We'd like to establish what we do and don't know about the proposed development.

What we do know is...

  • An application for the development of the Gloucester Road/Ashley Down Road site is proposed, and importantly, has been formally submitted & refused.

  • The proposed development application has been submitted by a company called Storegap Commercial on behalf of Sainsbury’s supermakets.

  • Surrey based developer Storegap Commercial has bought parts of the site and plans to build a supermarket with a sales area of 20,000 sq ft ('non-sales' sections, which means electrical/hard goods) and 150+ car parking spaces.

We welcome any help that you can provide in the fight to prevent this development from going ahead.
